  Born in Tbilisi. Finished the music college, graduated from the department of architecture of the Tbilisi Academy of Arts, from the department of directing at GTI (class of T.Abuladze and I.Kvirikadze). Worked as an architect; sine the late 1970s works in cinema. Acted in several movies, wrote scripts for some fiction films; a documentary and fiction director. Her debut movie «Robinsonade or My English Uncle» (1987) received the «Golden Camera» of the program «Un Certain Regard» at Cannes IFF and many more awards. The second film by the director «A Thousand and One Recipe of the Enamored Cook» (1996) was nominated for an «Oscar» from Georgia and won prizes at prestigious film forums. In 1985_1991 taught in Tbilisi, in 1991_1995 together with I.Kvirikadze taught a class for directors at VGIK. Member of the European Film Academy. Her fiction films include: «A Trip to Sopot» (1981, short), «Summer, or 27 Stolen Kisses» (2000), «Living Letter» (2003, short), «Only You…» (2004, TV series), «Of Fire and Light…» (2006, TV series).
